Applications. Gadgets. Software. Appliances. Systems. Thousands upon thousands of things over the years, all calling for our attention, and all of them promising to “save time.”

This has been seen world-round— recently the BBC published an article succinctly summarizing that “Technology is largely a succession of time-saving devices.”
But that begs the question: if the technology actually works, where is all that time that we’ve saved?

The truth is that any time-savings is generally reinvested.

For instance, laundry used to be a full-day chore. Anyone who’s visited New Orleans knows that Mondays are red beans and rice day, because the Monday tradition of laboriously washing, rinsing, then setting out clothes by hand required a dinner dish that could cook over a long period of time with little tending. Now washers and dryers have reduced the task to minutes, but curiously, even in the “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” French Quarter, typical Mondays have not now transformed into an additional day devoted to rest.
People keep working, usually just as much, despite saving time with technology. In fact, today’s proverb is that everyone is doing more in the same amount of time as they used to.

But something terrific does happen with technology– something that improves our lives immensely. Most individuals seek fulfillment in their work and personal lives. They do want time to rest, but that rest typically becomes meaningful only when balanced against work that they enjoy. For many, happiness in life means doing work that actually counts for something. So any time-saving approach that eliminates or relieves repetitious tasks of drudgery allows workers to focus on something else.
And that something else is almost always more fulfilling.

There is good news for employers who embrace technology, too, that can help eliminate mindless tasks.

Not only can a time-savings philosophy and investment lead to a happier workplace, but according to the Harvard Business Review, it can pay off with higher profits per employee.
Recently the University of California Office of the President published a paper about cost savings for the school One prominent finding was that the University was “Printing way too much…” often requiring “multiple hours and multiple individuals… causing “late fees and mad-dashes.”
5i Solutions, Inc. knows this situation well. Many tasks involving paper fall into the mindless and repetitive category. The intake of paper data, arranging it, checking it, and filing it can be absolutely numbing to the brain and to the spirit. And later on when the data needs to be accessed for use, real organizational challenges can result. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to being a singular solution to that saves your business time, saves your business money, and helps your employees work on the important tasks that make you both glad you work together.
